Logistics market data from Central Dispatch showed that average list prices per mile (PPM) continued to decline year–over–year for the month of December, the fifth sequential decline in a row. The average listed price per mile was $1.04, a decline of 2.8% from the prior year. The average list price per mile was flat against the November 2024 price of $1.04 in the prior month. Last year we also experienced lower prices in the month of December relative to November, and we observed a similar trend this year. The price of Diesel has fallen to $3.51 per gallon over the last year, a decline of 11.8%, which helps explain the decline in the price per listed mile.

In December 2024, the average mileage for a move was 914 miles which was up 9.6% against the same month last year. If we measure against last month, average mileage for a vehicle transported increased 2.8%.
Looking a bit deeper…
Looking at the underlying factors, there was no change to the mix of trailer types with Open trailers remaining the most used segment for the month. Additionally, trends for mileage were mixed as we observed higher average miles for Open trailer types but lower mileage trends for Driveaway trailers, which declined 10% over the last month. Analyzing moves by the size of vehicle transported, the data indicate lower prices per mile for the movement of extra-large units, down 7% against November 2024. This was offset by an increase in PPM for medium and large–sized vehicles transported over the last month, up 3% and 2% respectively over the same time period.
