Logistics market data from Central Dispatch showed that average list prices per mile continued to decline year-over-year for the month of October. The average listed price per mile was $1.05, a decline of 5.4% from the prior year. Average list price per mile was down against September 2024 decreasing by 1.9% from $1.07 in the prior month. Last year we experienced higher prices in the month of October relative to September, but this year prices have fallen, which may be somewhat driven by the price of Diesel falling 20.1% on a per gallon basis since last October.

In October 2024, the average mileage for a move was 920 miles which was up 15.7% against the same month last year. If we measure against September 2024, average mileage for a vehicle transported was higher by 4.4%.
Looking a bit deeper…
Looking at the underlying factors, there was a small change in the mix of trailer types both against last year and month over month as Enclosed trailers were up a point, which was offset by a decline in Open. Additionally, we saw higher mileage for every trailer type on a month over month basis, with Driveaway up 8%, Open increasing by 5%, and Enclosed trailers 1% higher for the period. Analyzing moves by the size of vehicle transported, the data indicate lower prices per mile for the movement across most vehicle sizes, with extra-large units falling 11% against September 2024, large units falling by 4%, and small-size vehicles falling 1% on the month. The move for medium-size units was unchanged over the same time.
